LONDON: Squash launches its bid for inclusion on the 2106 Olympic programme during the 2008 Hi-Tec World Championships in Manchester, England next week.

There is one year to go for the sports vote at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark. According to plan IOC members will first select their 2016 Host city then turn to consider the Olympic programme for those Games.

Seven sports are contesting one place on the Olympic roster: baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby, softball, and squash. Softball and baseball enjoyed Olympic status throughout the Beijing Games but will not be on the London 2012 programme.

The launch will feature World Squash Federation President, Jahangir Khan, to outline the squash bid and credentials for Olympic consideration. He is widely recognized as the greatest player ever and brings credibility to the court.

The Hi-Tec World Championships, between October 11 and 19, will mark a notable change in the history of the competition, seeing men’s and women’s matches run together in the United Kingdom for the first time. Event sponsor Hi-Tec is responsible for designing the first shoe dedicated to squash.

The ‘Countdown to Copenhagen’ will see many elite level players on hand to support the bid.
