France enters 2018 winter slalom

PARIS: French Olympic Committee president Henri Serandour has officially thrown the CNOSF's hat in the ring to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

"After the failure in July 2005 in getting the 2012 Games, we had to rebound and stay in this dynamic by defining new goals," said Serandour who steps down next May.

He told a press conference in Paris: "Olympic ambition has been very marked since then with a great desire for candidacy for the Summer Games.

"We have long thought that a bid to host the Winter Olympics would be a good break from the Summer Games and to be a candidate in 2018 offers a good chance to get the Summer Olympics at a future date."

France’s official candidate will be announced in March 2009 but three cities have already expressed interest: Annecy, Nice and Grenoble. This could mark a second Olympic chance for Grenoble which hosted a splendid Games in 1968, twinning with the Mexico City summer edition.

Although this is early in the 2018 race the chosen French city will be up against one already declared rival in Munich, Germany.

The 2018 Winter Games will be followed by a summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games which is a further factor for consideration by IOC members. The 2018 decision is likely to be set for 2011, seven years prior to the hosting.

France has staged three Olympic Winter Games - Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968 and Albertville 1992. Capital city Paris hosted the Summer Games in 1900 and 1924. Paris also bid in vain for the summer Games of 1992, 2008 and 2012 but was beaten by Barcelona, Beijing and London.

The next Winter Games will be Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014.
