MADRID: Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón has told Spain’s most high-profile political television show about his  determination to bring the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to the Spanish capital.

“The most important job I can do as Mayor is to bring the Olympic Games to Madrid,” he confirmed on I Have a Question for You and declared that this was his No1 priority.  He added: “It is without doubt the best opportunity for a city to follow its collective dream.”

Ruiz-Gallardon pointed out that the successful hosting of the Barcelona ’92 Games had greatly benefited public infrastructure as well as the Catalan citizens and that a similar circumstance would ensure a similar legacy for Madrid.

He assured the viewing audience: “We’re going for it. We’re working all the way towards the president of the IOC to announce in Copenhagen in November 2009 that Madrid will organize the 2016 Olympics.”

Ruiz-Gallardón also has a strong commitment to leave a social legacy for the Madrileños and the Spanish citizens. He noted that Madrid has designed the Games’ concept as “Games of the People” and hoped it could show how sport can be a driving force for social transformation.
