May 7 - International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan has joined the board of the International Olympic Truce Foundation (IOTF) led by IOC head Dr. Jacques Rogge.
In 2000 the IOTF was founded to promote peace and friendship through sport following the ancient tradition of the Olympic Truce and calling for all hostilities to cease during the staging of the Olympic Games and beyond.
Prince Feisal addressed the board through a video message and said, “It is a great honour for me to be appointed to serve on the Board of the Olympic Truce Foundation.
“I believe in the power of the Olympic Movement as a force for peace building and development. From grass roots to elite champions, sport offers a unique language for dialogue and interaction, and a powerful vehicle for integrated education and behaviour change.”
The Prince is the founder and chairman of the Generations For Peace organization which is devoted to peace building through sport and now has branched out to their own institute for peace studies.
He reiterated, “Generations For Peace, which I founded in 2007, empowers volunteer leaders of youth to promote active tolerance and responsible citizenship in communities experiencing different forms of conflict. Our programmes operate on two levels: targeting youth leaders and adults who are influential in their communities; and children and adolescents who are the future of their communities.
“Our partnership with Sochi 2014 has started in 2010 with hosting of international training camps for leaders of youth from the Russian Federation and 11 other countries in Europe and Asia. After two years of successfully hosted camps, we have now extended our partnership to provision of support to these Delegates to implement peace building programmes that make a real difference in their local communities. This is the first time an Organising Committee is delivering concretely its legacy commitments by harnessing the power of sport for peace in the lead up to the Games. This is the Olympic Truce in action.”
Prince Feisal is flanked by his wife, Princess Sarah Al Feisal, who serves as president of the organization.
