TAMPA: The ‘80’s rock band Duran Duran will be on stage representing Great Britain for a special London 2012 concert happening simultaneously at the start of the summer Games.

The band together with Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, and Paolo Nutini will be the headliners of the concert that will be in partnership with the Mayor of London, The Royal Parks and The London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and a key part of the citywide schedule of events.

The concert that will coincide with the launch of the Games in Hyde Park on July 27th and attendees at will be able to watch the official opening ceremony live on broadcast screens.

Tickets for the BT London Live opening ceremony concert are going to be available to BT customers only this Thursday before they are made available to the general public on Friday.

The decision about the choice of the band was met with some skepticism to open the high profile event as they were popular in the ‘80’s and have only had two top ten hits in the past 20 years.

Tony Parsons, British novelist and journalist, Tweeted in response “Duran Duran to headline Olympic gig. Who is running the 1500 metres - Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett?”

The Duran Duran Twitter account was a blaze with the news

“Olympics! Olympics! Olympics! Olympics! Olympics! Olympics! Olympics! Olympics! Tix on sale May 4,9am UK time! Olympics!!”
