TAMPA: As part of their bid plan Doha 2020 is also aiming to setup a High Performance Training Centre for women athletes to boost female sport.

This new training center idea is part of Qatar’s 2030 Vision that foresees more equal opportunities.

This year for London 2012 Qatar will send female athletes to the Games for the first time with IOC “qualified by invitations” that used to be called wildcards. The QOC is also looking to get two more invitations to try to bring four women.

Bid vice-chairman, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, said, “Our social responsibilities are very important because we are talking about what will be the legacy that we want to leave for Doha. And this is one of the areas that we have already encountered in our master plan that we started working on over two years ago. We wanted to identify all the sporting venues and the benefit that society would gain from our proposal.

“As we emphasized we are not talking about only Qatar, this bid is a present for the whole region. We are emphasizing that hosting the Olympic Games in 2020 in Qatar affects the areas of North Africa as well as the Middle East and many surrounding areas.

Deputy ceo, Fahad Juma, technical director and project management, added, “If Doha wins the 2020 bid, the Games will change lives and build bridges by changing the world’s perception of the Middle East. Most significantly it will empower both young men and women to spur them to greater participation and productivity in the region’s growth.”

“Our legacy planning for the venues is already well advanced and we are very proud that we are putting in place facilities that will benefit the whole region, including a High Performance Training Centre for female athletes.  It will be a real boost for girls and women who want to become elite competitors.”

Also the Arab Spring movement has been a catalyst to change the mindset in the region and many innovations have been attributed to this effort.

Sheikh Saoud also reiterated that Doha 2020 is the perfect opportunity to help change the lifestyles of young people and to make a mark on society.
