FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lausanne, 14 June 2012. Yesterday ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) published a list of 1930 applications for gTLDs (generic Top-Level Domain names) including SportAccord’s previously announced .
SportAccord’s application is based on a mandate from its members (107 International Sports Federations and Organisations) and the support of the IOC (International Olympic Committee). Of the three .SPORT(s) applications published by ICANN, SportAccord’s application is the only one seeking a community designation and supported by a representative body of the Sports Community.
SportAccord is committed to ensuring that the .SPORT TLD is accountable to, and used in the best interest of, the Sport Community. In order to facilitate this objective, SportAccord has constituted a Policy Advisory Board (PAB) composed of representatives of sports stakeholders including FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball), FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football), UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale), IOC, Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and other key representative organisations. To date, three meetings of the PAB have already taken place and the long-term strategy of usage and protection of the domain name is well on track.
Consistent with SportAccord’s commitment to the global Sport Community, this PAB is not limited to providing strong leadership to the .SPORT gTLD application but is also intended to ensure the optimal development of Sport awareness for all sport-themed gTLDs.
